Problem

Disney+ Hotstar’s movie catalogue data — spanning genres, runtimes, release years, and age ratings — existed in raw, disconnected form. Without a unified analytical view, key insights into audience preferences and content trends were overlooked, slowing strategic decisions across production, acquisition, and marketing.

Approach

  • Imported and profiled 6,000+ movie titles in Power BI, assessing completeness and relevance

  • Standardized fields, resolved missing values, and ensured consistency across genre, runtime, and age rating

  • Created calculated fields using DAX to enable segmentation and trend analysis

  • Built a multi-page, interactive dashboard with slicers for genre, release year, and age rating

  • Designed bar charts, line charts, scatter plots, heatmaps, and KPI cards aligned to business questions

  • Applied consistent colour palette and layout principles to enhance clarity and stakeholder engagement

Insights

  • High-Demand Genres: Action, Drama, and Comedy consistently lead viewership prime targets for future production and licensing

  • Runtime Optimization: Shorter formats show higher engagement, especially among younger audiences

  • Seasonal Release Peaks: Festive and holiday periods drive release spikes — ideal windows for premieres and marketing pushes

  • Audience Segmentation: Most titles rated “U/A 13+” or “U/A 16+” — indicating opportunity to expand kids’ and family content

  • Retention Opportunities: High-episode series present strong binge potential — ideal for targeted campaigns

Impacts

  • Delivered a Power BI dashboard that transformed raw movie data into actionable insights — enabling faster, evidence-based planning

  • Identified top-performing genres, seasonal peaks, and emerging categories to guide production and acquisition

  • Mapped preferences by age rating and runtime to support targeted recommendations and retention strategies

  • Revealed seasonal spikes in releases, allowing campaigns to be timed for peak audience engagement

  • Provided historical trend analysis to benchmark performance and forecast demand shifts for long-term portfolio strategy
